Dr John Hemming Literary Dinner -

English Liberator: William Miller (of Wingham) & the Independence of

Spanish South America

Thursday 26th February 2026

Thursday 26th February 2026

William the baker’s son from Wingham, rose higher than any village boy from any village anywhere in late-18th-century Britain. He fought, bravely and brilliantly, alongside all the great liberators of Spanish South America (San Martin, Bolivar, Admiral Lord Cochrane and O'Higgins), aged only 27 he was the only foreign general at the final victory, and later became the only foreign Field Marshal ever of Peru, where he is buried in the Pantheon of Founding Fathers. He was then, for fourteen years, the first British diplomat in the Pacific, based in Hawaii. William Miller was passionately anti-imperialist, anti-slavery, for ordinary peasant farmers since he was one, and very popular - even grudgingly with his opponents.

Our speaker John Hemming is a leading and acclaimed historian of South America - and explorer of the Amazon and its indigenous peoples. His twenty books and histories of South America have earned him a rare D.Litt.. doctorate from Oxford, as well as the President's Medal from the British Academy, and honorary doctorates, medals, etc. from several universities and countries.  His Amazonian field research has also earned him a slew of medals and awards. Please join us for the free talk in Wigham Church which will be an engrossing evening.
